Why Shokz Beat AirPods for Running

When it comes to choosing the right headphones for running, sound quality isn’t the only thing that matters. Comfort, safety, and reliability become just as important once the miles start adding up.

I learned that the hard way with my AirPods, and it’s exactly why I switched to Shokz bone-conduction headphones.

The Run That Changed My Mind

During a 20-mile training run, I relied on my AirPods to keep me motivated and locked into my pace. Everything was fine… until mile 14.

They died.

No music.
No rhythm.
No background noise to distract me from the fatigue setting in.

Anyone who has been deep into a long run knows how much music matters when things get hard. Those final six miles felt significantly longer without it. By the time I finished, I knew something had to change.

My most recent marathon training block I was using my Airpods on long runs and once they died I had wired headphones in my running belt that I would use as back-up. The wired headphones kept falling out of my ears and it was sensory overload for me feeling the wires on my neck.

I knew I needed headphones that were reliable and long-lasting.

I recently switched to Shokz bone-conduction headphones, and I haven’t looked back!

Why Shokz Are Better for Runners

1. Ambient Awareness Keeps You Safe

Shokz use bone-conduction technology, meaning sound is delivered through your cheekbones instead of directly into your ear canals. Your ears stay open, allowing you to hear traffic, cyclists, and other runners around you.

This is a huge safety advantage, especially for outdoor running. While newer AirPods models offer transparency modes, the awareness doesn’t feel as natural or reliable as simply having open ears. With my Airpods in I cannot hear anything going on in my environment.

For road running, trail running, or busy paths, this alone is a game changer, especially as a girl who often runs alone!

2. Comfort for Long Distances

Nothing sitting inside your ears means no pressure, no soreness, and no constant adjusting. No falling out of your ears and no wires to feel on your neck.

Shokz wrap around your head and rest just outside the ears, making them incredibly comfortable for long runs. On runs lasting hours, I forget I’m even wearing them!

If you’ve ever dealt with ear pain or irritation mid-run, this design makes a noticeable difference.

3. Secure Fit Through Sweat and Movement

Shokz are designed specifically for active use. Models like the OpenRun or OpenMove are sweat-resistant and stay securely in place during sprints, intervals, hills, and long steady runs.

While AirPods Pro have improved fit and sweat resistance, they can still shift or feel unstable during high-intensity movement. With Shokz, there’s no fear of one falling out mid-stride.

4. Battery Life That Goes the Distance

This is where Shokz truly shine.

Most Shokz models offer significantly longer continuous battery life than AirPods. I can run for over four hours without worrying about my headphones dying, which is essential for marathon training, long trail runs, or race day.

After losing my music at mile 14 once, battery anxiety is not something I want to deal with again. I would say my Airpods last roughly 2 hours before the battery life dies.

Also, not sure if this is just a problem I experience but often times only one ear bud is charged while the other ear bud is completing dead. There has been countless times I've sat waiting for my Airpods to both be fully charged and that is precious time I will never get back.

Final Thoughts

AirPods are great for everyday listening, work calls, and casual use. But running, especially long-distance training, demands more.

It demands:

  • Awareness of your surroundings

  • All-day comfort

  • A secure, stay-put fit

  • Battery life you can actually rely on

  • Sweat and water resistance built for real miles

That’s where Shokz stand out. They’re designed with runners in mind.

After that 20-mile run, I realized that reliability matters just as much as sound quality. The last thing you want during a long run is to worry about your headphones dying or constantly adjusting them. With Shokz, I can focus on my pace, my breathing, and the miles ahead, not my battery percentage.

I’ll be honest: I was worried I wouldn’t hear my music clearly and that I’d be distracted by my heavy breathing. But the sound quality surprised me in the best way! My music comes through loud and clear, while I can still hear cars, bikes, and other runners around me. It’s the perfect balance between immersion and awareness.

If you’re serious about running, especially long runs, marathon training, or outdoor miles, Shokz aren’t just a nice upgrade. They’re a smarter choice.

And honestly? That peace of mind alone makes the switch worth it.

Best Running Gels for Marathon Training: What Worked (and Didn’t) for Me

When I trained for my   first half marathon , my fueling strategy was simple: water. That was it. I remember hearing runners talk about taking gels during runs and honestly having no idea what they meant. I was able to run 10, 11, even 12 miles with only water, so I figured I would be fine, and technically, I was... But after every Saturday long run, my legs were completely exhausted. Heavy, sore, and slow to recover. At the time, I didn’t realize that the missing piece was  proper mid-run fueling . How I Learned the Importance of Fueling During Long Runs When I started training for my  first full marathon , I kept hearing the same advice: If you want strong legs and steady energy through 26.2 miles, you need to fuel with carbs during your runs. That’s when I finally started experimenting with running gels. Once I began taking gels during long runs, I immediately noticed the benefits: More consistent energy Stronger legs late in runs Faster recovery after long miles Fueli...

Why I Use the Runna App for Marathon Training (and Why It Actually Works When Used Correctly!)

Recently, there’s been a lot of online criticism aimed at running influencers who get injured, with much of the blame being placed on the Runna app. Many influencers are sponsored by Runna, so you often see them posting workouts, racing frequently, and unfortunately, sometimes dealing with injuries. But here’s the thing: running injuries are rarely caused by a single factor  and it’s not fair to blame an app. There are countless reasons runners get injured: increasing weekly mileage too quickly, skipping strength training, inadequate fueling, poor recovery, life stress, or running every run too hard. Placing all the responsibility on an AI training app oversimplifies a much more complex issue. I know this firsthand. During my first marathon training block, I developed IT band syndrome, and I wasn’t using any AI running app at all. I got injured because I ramped up my mileage too fast, didn’t strength train and ran nearly every run at a hard pace. Ironically, since I started us...

The Best Running Biker Shorts for Thick Thighs (No Ride Up, No Chafing)

I am a huge fan of biker shorts for running. If you have thicker thighs like me, you already know the struggle. Those cute, flowy running shorts? They might look great, but for me they lead to unimaginable chafing — no matter how much anti-chafe lotion I apply. After one too many painful runs, I made it my mission to find biker shorts that could actually survive long training blocks. Shorts that don’t ride up. Shorts that don’t cause chafing. Shorts that can carry you through marathon training. And most importantly — shorts that are affordable enough to buy in multiple colors without burning a hole in your wallet. If you’re part of the thicker thigh club, this list is for you. 🥇 My Top Pick: Colorfulkoala 6” Inseam Biker Shorts My number one go-to pair is the Colorfulkoala 6-inch inseam biker short . I own multiple pairs, and they are truly my favorite running shorts. They do not ride up. Not on short runs. Not on long runs. Not during speed work. They stay put! Why I love them: The 6...
