Race-Day Checklist: Your Ultimate Guide to Nailing the Big Day

The Boston and London Marathons are only a few weeks away! The excitement of race day can be overwhelming, and the pre-race jitters are totally normal. If you're anything like me, you’ll probably find yourself wondering, Did I forget something? or What if I’m missing an important item? To help calm those nerves, I’ve put together a comprehensive race-day checklist. This will ensure that when you step up to the starting line, you're fully prepared and ready to race!

The Night Before: Get Everything Ready

The night before the big race is crucial for setting yourself up for success. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than waking up to dead electronics or not having your gear organized. Here’s your checklist to follow:

  1. Charge Your Electronics:

    • Running Watch – Make sure it’s fully charged so you can track your race.

    • Phone – You’ll want it for music, emergency contacts, or to track your time.

    • Headphones – Don’t forget to plug those in! The last thing you want is to wake up with no music or a dead battery.

  2. Lay Out Your Race-Day Outfit:
    Having your race gear ready to go will save you time and mental energy in the morning. Here’s what you should prep:

    • Running Shorts/Pants

    • Running Top

    • Sports Bra

    • Socks

    • Sneakers

    • Running Belt or Vest

    • Hand-held Water Bottles

    • Sunglasses or Hat (especially if it’s sunny!)

    • Sunscreen

    • Race Bib with Safety Pins (don’t forget these!)

  3. Throw-Away Clothes (if it’s cold):
    If the morning of your race is chilly, plan to bring some warm layers you don’t mind ditching once you warm up. These could be old clothes or a cheap sweatshirt you can toss when the race starts.

  4. Clear Plastic Bag for Post-Race Gear:
    If you have a bag drop at the race start, make sure you have a clear bag, which you can usually pick up at the race expo! It's also helpful for stashing clothes for after the race if you don't have someone to meet you at the finish line.

Race-Day Essentials to Pack:

Now that your clothes are sorted, let’s take care of your race-day fuel and other essentials.

  1. Race Fuel:

    • Gels, chews, or anything you rely on to keep your energy up during the race. Make sure you have these ready and easy to access.

  2. Electrolytes:

    • You’ll want to stay hydrated, and electrolytes will help replenish those essential minerals lost during the race.

  3. Breakfast To-Go:

    • If you have a long wait before the race starts, bring a light breakfast or snack to keep your energy up. Think bananas, granola bars, or a quick smoothie.

  4. Identification:

    • It’s always a good idea to carry some form of ID with you, just in case of emergency. You can either carry it on your person or stash it in your race belt.

  5. Credit Card/Debit Card:

    • Having a card with you is a good idea if you plan on grabbing something after the race or need money for any reason.

Final Check:

  • Fuel and Hydration Plan: Know where the water stops are along the course and make sure you’re fueling at regular intervals.

  • Mental Preparation: Visualize yourself crossing the finish line!! Stay focused and remind yourself that you’ve trained hard for this moment.
